Is
a ‘budget computer’ the
right computer for me?
- These systems
are usually okay for the computer
novice. However there will
be limitations in functionality
and performance.
- Do you
plan to run multiple applications
at once? If
so, computers with more RAM (memory)
would better suit you. These
systems usually have minimal RAM
installed.
- Do you
plan on creating spreadsheets,
presentations, publications,
flyers, word processing documents
or newsletters? If
so, you will need to purchase Microsoft
Office or similar productivity
software. It is always cheaper
to purchase this software with
a new computer rather than
off the shelf at a later date.
- Do you already
own a monitor? Be sure to read
the fine print. Many of these deals
do not include a monitor at all
or they are offered at an additional
cost.
- Do you
want an extended hardware warranty? Most
of these systems only include
a 1-year basic warranty; additional
years are offered at an additional
cost.
- Do you want to create your own DVDs? If so, you will
most likely need more RAM (memory), a larger hard drive, a DVD Writer
instead of a basic CD-ROM and DVD authoring software.
- Do you
plan on playing video games or
multimedia projects? If so, you will need
a faster processor, more RAM (memory),
speakers and a high-end video graphics
card to support these applications.
Price shouldn't be the driving force when
deciding which computer to buy.
Always keep in mind what you are using the
computer for!
